Essential Reads on Marginalized Communities

I think it’s God who has been directing me to learn more about the lives of marginalized people. These books have really helped me gain understanding and empathy:

  1. Whiskey Tender: A Memoir by Deborah Jackson Taffa to better understand indigenous people and what they go through in daily life.
  2. Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler to better understand LGBTQ+ people and what they go through in daily life.
  3. The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson to better understand African American history & people and the obstacles they face.
  4. Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora, to better understand why and how people immigrate to the USA. The story is told through the eyes of an adorable nine-year-old boy.
  5. Strength to Love by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to better understand the beloved community, the divine presence in all life, and how to apply the Sermon on the Mount to social justice.
