Thoughts on the Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5-7
Part 10
Jesus warns us that there are things around us that will pull us out of the flow of the Spirit, things that will prevent us from living as kingdom people. If we do what we do for the purpose of being seen, appreciated, promoted, or advantaged, our actions will lack cruciform Kingdom power.
6:1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before others in order to be seen by them, for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Jesus chose three examples that were commonly practiced by all first century Jews. We might apply the same principle to daily devotions, going to church, or singing in the choir. Three examples of common religious practices that are too often done in order to draw attention to oneself:
- Almsgiving. Almsgiving is simply giving money to the poor. It’s something deeply imbedded in both testaments of the Bible. So the first question is, are we doing so? Are we supporting those charities that are practically helping the poor? Do we step in financially and help a struggling neighbor not lose her house because of medical bills?
Almsgiving is a good thing. Do it. Just don’t do it in order to be seen. If your purpose is to have your name in a program, or on a plaque, or (if you’re really rich) on a big building, you’ve missed the proverbial boat. Just be generous without any thought as to whether others see it or give you “atta-boys.”
- Prayer. Pray. Pray a lot. Pray without ceasing. But not to draw attention to yourself or appear pious. As a matter of fact, pray like this:
- Our. Note the plural pronouns. This is for all of us, collectively.
- Father: Our loving heavenly father who created us, sent his Son to redeem us, sent his Spirit to empower us, and who loves us unconditionally.
- In the heavens. God is everywhere. In the sky above and the seas below. God is transcendent and glorious. God is also intimate, kind, and caring.
- Hallowed be your name. We pray that in all we do and say, we will guard your reputation, living in such a way as to reflect your character.
- Your Kingdom come. Here, now, in us. And also, fully, completely, universally. Not my kingdom. Not my agenda. Your Kingdom.
- Your will be done. Because that is always what is best for us. God is perfect love. God always has our best interests in mind. God is wise. Your will; not mine; yours.
- As in the heavens, so on earth. Shalom, wholeness, peace, love, joy, reconciliation, forgiveness, and grace fill the heavens, the realm of God and God’s angels. Help us turn earth into heaven.
- Give us this day. All we need is now, today. Tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us. God gives what we need for this present moment. Trust God. He feeds birds and clothes lilies.
- Our daily bread. Basic needs: healthful food, pure water, proper sanitation, safe affordable housing, medical and dental care, psychological and addiction treatment, job training, job placement, friends in a welcoming community. Daily bread.
- Forgive us our sins, trespasses, debts. Wipe the slate clean. Create new hearts within us. Hearts that reflect Jesus.
- In the same manner in which we forgive others. Forgiveness is a choice. It is not necessarily reconciliation (that takes two). It doesn’t mean putting yourself or your children in jeopardy or being friends with toxic people. It means letting go of the bitterness. It’s hard work.
- Don’t let anyone or anything lead us into temptation.
- Instead, deliver us from the evil one. Amen.
- Fasting. Fasting is going without food for a period of time to focus your attention on Jesus and to pray. It’s especially useful when you have an important decision to make or a deep concern. Fasting unleashes the powers of God. You can also fast from television, your devices, or anything else that gives you pleasure but is taking up time away from the main thing that’s on your mind. Fast. Don’t brag about it.
