Exploring Jesus’ Teachings: The Sermon on the Mount

Thoughts on the Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5-7

Part 3

The Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in Matthew, falls into three sections.

In the introductory section (5:1-16), Jesus declares that the Kingdom of the heavens has arrived, the people taking hold of it are the outsiders, and we participate in the Kingdom through peacemaking and suffering.

The middle section (5:17-7:12) is the main body of the sermon. He begins it by teaching us that we fulfill the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament) by practicing a greater righteousness than the scribes and the Pharisees, filling the world with self-sacrificial love. (5:17-20)

Then, Jesus goes on to show us that there is deep wisdom in the Law of Moses. He gives six examples dealing with contempt, dehumanizing, and manipulating, vs. generous and creative acts. (5:21-48)

Then he cautions us to do right things, good deeds, and religious practices for the right reasons, never for selfish gain. (6:1-18)

Finally, he teaches us about our relationships with stuff and with other people. (6:19-7:12)

The concluding section contains three contrasts: Narrow vs. wide gates (7:13-14), false vs. true guides (7:15-23), and solid vs. unstable foundations (7:24-27)

Surprise! The Kingdom of the Heavens is here, now. It’s not what you expect. You expected a militant messiah leading a group of strong patriots to overthrow Rome and set up a revived monarchy.

Instead, this kingdom is embraced by the poor and down-and-out. Lies are countered with truth in this kingdom. Hatred is defeated by love. Death is undone by dying. Acts of justice and mercy cascade down from this mountain.
